The Ressel is a resurgence on the Célé, a tributary of the Lot, in the limestone country of south-west France. You kit up beside the river, drop into the water and swim down into the entrance. For many European cave divers, it's the benchmark cave.

## The dive

The cave is known for its layered structure. The first galleries are relatively shallow, around 30 m, and are a common dive for trained cave divers on back gas or nitrox. From there, shafts and passages lead deeper, and serious penetration requires trimix, staged decompression and often rebreathers.

The deep sections have been explored over several decades by teams pushing at the limits of open-circuit and closed-circuit diving.

## Conditions

The water is cold, around 13 °C, so a drysuit and good thermal protection are normal. Flow and visibility depend on rainfall upstream. After heavy rain, the cave can become unsafe to dive, and conditions can change within days. Local divers and dive centres are the best source of current information.

## Why it matters

The Ressel lets divers progress. The same cave supports a first dive in the shallow galleries and serious exploration in the deep sections. That makes it a good place to see the gap between cave levels clearly, and a good reminder to stay within your training when the next section is right in front of you.

## Planning notes

- Cave training is essential. This isn't a site for extending cavern or open-water qualifications.
- Plan gas carefully for the depth and for possible flow on the exit.
- The Lot region has many other caves and resurgences, so many divers base themselves in the area for a week or more.
- Respect local rules on parking, access and kit preparation. Continued access depends on good relations with local residents.
